Henry VIII, King of England

Henry VIII, King of England
(1491-1547)
Henry was born at Greenwich, near London, the son of Henry VII, and succeeded to the throne of England in 1509. He presided over the beginnings of the English Renaissance and the English Reformation, and in 1521 Pope Leo X conferred on him the title "Defender of the Faith," which title every other British monarch holds. The fact that he had six wives and that he had two of them beheaded gives the impression of a cruel monarch. But he was educated in the classics, spoke and wrote several languages fluently, including Latin, studied philosophy and religion, and was a talented musician who made his court a center of musical culture. He wrote prose and romantic poetry and composed masses and ballads. He was buried in St. George's Chapel, Windsor. Some of his many poems; "Alas, What Shall I Do for Love?" "Green Groweth the Holly," "Oh My Heart," "Pastyme with Good Company," "Though That Men Do," "Call It Dotage to His Lady," "Whereto Should I Express," "Whoso That Will for Grace Sue," "Without Discord."
